Why move Peter Stevens’ bench?

A few years ago I used to write a blog and Time Out column on the stories behind London’s memorial benches. Of the dozens covered, none was more touching than that of Peter Stevens, a young man who died at just 26, and is remembered by a bench at the summit of Primrose Hill, bearing these words:

“Peter Stevens, Musician and dreamer, whose favourite place was Primrose Hill 1.2.1981 – 9.6.2007, NW1”

His bandmate Mat Croft said at the time: ‘Pete was a big personality, a wild-haired, hilarious guy…a natural showman, explosive and unpredictable on stage – even at our last show, whilst he could barely stand, he still gave it his all. Everyone felt that the top of Primrose Hill was the perfect place as Pete spent so much time there, and since losing him it’s been a spot to sit and reflect. ’

However yesterday, his mother Alison Ritchie emailed us saying that she’d had a letter from the Royal Parks to say they are re-styling the top of the hill:

‘The plan is to replace the old benches with backless ones. We’re sad he is having to move and also think it’s a shame that people who walk up the hill can’t lean back and relax. His friends who collected the money for the plaque and whose idea it was are upset. I think we paid £800 for this so it seems mean to make us move.’

Yes, parks need updating but we believe Peter’s bench should stay. Surely Camden Council can see that? If you wish to add comments or object do so here. You have until Feb 1.

On a happier note, so many people donated money for Peter’s bench that Alison was able to start a charity fund, The Peter Stevens Music Project, which provides music lessons at Pupil Referral Units in Hackney.

‘It’s still going,’ she reports, ‘and proving successful. It was the sort of work he intended to do when he recovered.’

Come on Camden Council, have a heart, have some integrity. This means something to people, a lot more than some design concept. Have some respect, and it’ll come back to you.
